On the Idiot Box Tonight

Tonight marks the return of Deal or No Deal. There is no need for trivia knowledge and no stupid stunts. Just a lot of pressure and one million dollars.

The premise is simple. You choose a case then slowly reveal the contents of other cases. Every now and then, the banker makes you an offer. You either take his offer or reveal more cases. Eventually you must take his offer or what's in your case.

Here is what I clicked:
Deal or No Deal Game

I'm on the fence concerning if this is a good show or not. Are we Americans becoming too stupid to play jeopardy? But all in all it is a fun show. Although the whole thing could take 10 minutes to play it get drug waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out. It's best to watch on TiVo.

I've been running a statistical analysis on the bankers offers (based on the online game). I think there must be a random number generator involved in the final bid of + or - 5% or so. On the show I believe a human being makes the final call on the bid using a statistical analysis to give them a starting point.

Stephen said when I watched with him during its last run he can always predict what the bid is going to be. If you believe this you should write down your offer before the banker's is revealed and compare it to the bankers. Otherwise you are likely to remember only your successes and not your misses.

Statistically it is a MANOVA problem (multiple analysis of variables). The major factors are the "average" cash in each case, the number of cases left and America's poor math skills. Bear in mind that even if you loose the 1,000,000 dollar case the bid could go up because of the overall increase in the "average" cash per case ratio.

You have TiVo?

Awesome. Where does it rank on your list of life-changing events?

Actually I don't have TiVo now. I lived for a time with DVR (which is basically the same).

Currently I'm living amish. No Cable, no internet at home. I was too dependant. But I really want to get TiVo back. You could watch what you wanted when you wanted. It was fantastic. Freedom.... yeah!

On the scale of life-changeing events it would go:

1) Learning to read
2) Learning how to make people laugh
3) Getting TiVo
4) Learning how to make people cry
5) Getting braces for the second time at age 25.

ooh, i played it once all the way through, i made $750,000! i went with lucky number 22 which is my anniversary! WOOHOO! i had $1 million, $750k, $400, and $100 left for the final 4. lost 1 mill then $100 and decided to go for it all. i liked the game show the first week it was out, and after that suz and i just couldn't handle watching it because it drags out one game way too long.

they should make the option of opening the case right away or doing the banker route. i think that would be fun, quick, and painless.

I hate this game show, but your dad says I WAS screaming at the TV like the commercial says. Also, it is a serious overdose of Howie Mandel without any hair.

I took $240,000 from the banker only to find out that my case held the $1 million prize.

This show sounds like a Kafka-esque metaphor for life. If you are not satisfied with what you have, you can risk losing everything for the unknown. Or if you are content or simply think things will never be any better than they are right now, you just keep what you have.

Should you take Teddy Roosevelt's advice to dare mighty things even though checkered by failure so you don't rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat?

That's way too heavy for a TV show. I'll stick with The Dog Whisperer. Now there's some real lessons for life!

Kafka-esque! I'm so proud to have a blog where the word Karka-esque could be used and understood by my illustrious and intellegent readershipitude. You go James C!

I watched my first episode last night.

"Number 16?"

*turn to models and cases*

"Rebecca (or whatever typically model-ish name you want)"

*raise both hands*

*widen eyes*

*pause*

*drop both hands*

"Open the case."

Needless to say, it was awesome. I don't know what it is, but I was screaming at the screen too.

What is it about this show?

Like me, you like the show because It offers a chance to run a multiple analysis of co-variance (MANCOVA). I recently added the "C0-"

And because of the Kafka stuff.
